History: ACAA at 20

In 2016, ACAA is excited to celebrate its 20th year! As we look forward, we also look back on some of our greatest accomplishments as a group. 

1995

  • Co-founded by 10 Asian alumni from all schools of Columbia University
  • Inaugural Reception at The Asia Society, March 23, 1995. Speakers: Ainslee Embree, Professor emeritus of history, Professor Andrew Nathan, Director of The East Asian Institut
  • 1st Asian Alumni Picnic at Hudson River at Croton Point Park, July 29, 1995
  • ACAA Cosponsored a talk with Sherly WuDunn and Nicholas D. Kristof, Pultizer Winnder reporters discussed their experience as Beijing based correspondents detailed in their book, ChinaWakes: The Struggle for the Soul of a Rising Power
  • Community Service Committee launches Team Columbia Mentoring Program with Asian American Alliance (AAA), October 3, 1995
  • First ACAA newsletter “The Asian Columbian”, December 1995
  • Monthly happy hours, lecture on Jews in Shanghai during WWII, fall foliage hike in Westchester, jazz concert at Japan Society, intro to ballroom dancing class, and cosponsored events such as book signing, and ski trips

1996

1997

  • Third Annual Spring Event at Dag Hammarskjold Lounge of International Affairs Building, May 9,1997
    • Speakers: Fred Katayama (CC ’82 and JRN ’83), anchor and correspondent of CNN, and Professor Paul Anderer, chairman of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University
    • Anderer concluded with a story of a Chinese manservant of a Columbia University Trustee. The man gave his life savings to promote Chinese studies at Columbia. He signed his donation – ‘a Chinese Person’, a man despite his social position, was proud to be Chinese and want the study of his culture to be pursued. The gift given in the early 1900’s, represent the first major gift of Asian Studies
  • A Stage for Asian Americans, ACAA members attended the opening of Shanghai Lil produced by Pan Asian Reparatory Theatre, directed by Tisa Chang (Barnard Alumna), Founder of the Reparatory
  • “Hong Kong Hand-Over Night Videoconference” with HK Columbia Club via video-teleconferencing, moderated by Professor Andrew Nathan, Director of The East Asian Institute, and hosted by Conrad and Yin Lung, June 30, 1997
  • ACAA Website launched, July 1997
  • July 1, Hong Kong Handover Night – ACAA’s first video conference Hosted by Lungs (New York) and Chiu (HK)

  • Team Columbia welcome back student-alumni night at the Interchurch Center on campus, October 8, 1997
  • Form Columbia University Alumni Club of Singapore, October 17, 1997, supported by University Development & Alumni Relations Office and Columbia Singapore alumni
  • Organized guided tour of the “Treasure of China” exhibition in Metropolitan Museum
  • Sept 24 Dedication of the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science in recognition of the $25 million gift from the Fu Foundation
  • International Committee report new clubs in Philippine, Malaysia and Indonesia
  • Community Service Committee hosted the Career Brunch 

1998

  • Participation in President’s Council in Singapore to form an effective global alumni network, March 28, 1998. 25 representatives from Columbia alumni clubs/associations from 10 countries (Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and the US to discuss the development of the global alumni network

  • Prof Som was elected as a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the only non-Chinese scientist elected in the year, Sept 29, 1998

2002

  • John Jay Award Dinner @ The Plaza Hotel on March 6, 2002, ACAA co-founder 
    Conrad Lung received the John Jay Award
    for distinguished Professional Achievement and announced the formation of The ACAA Scholarship Fund.
  • Celebrated Asian Pacific American Awareness Month (APAAM) on campus with guest alumni speaker and honoree Henry Tang, Chairman of the Committee of 100, April 10, 2002

    • In a cozy, intimate group environment, members enjoyed spending time together and feasting on a delicious 12-course tasting menu with a non-traditional Vietnamese touch. Thumbs up was the verdict.
  • Dana Y. Wu CC’91, SIPA ’92 Receives 2003 Asian Heritage Award for her outstanding services to the Asian community and Columbia University at the annual Asian Alumni Reception on April 17th

2004

  • In celebration of the Lunary New Year, we held our first 2004 happy hour of the year with Cornell and MIT alumni and friends at Silkroad, January 15, 2004
    • MoCA (Museum of the Chinese in the Americas) also has a pictorial exhibit at Silkroad on the 100-year history of New York City's Chinatown.
  • Our 3rd Gourmet Club will feature a visit to Yello (in Chinatown) for a night of laughter with TakeOutComedy with "THE BEST OF." Dinner at Dim Sum GOGO afterwards. January 23, 2004
  • There were almost 270 attendees at the 2nd ACAA Lunar New Year banquet including Dean Galil and Dean Quigley. Performances included lion dancing and Korean Drum troupe. With their bellies full of good food many people strut their stuff on the dance floor. Peking Park Restaurant, February 7th, 2004.
  • Almost 60 members attended the ACAA and Asia Circle Private Reception. The guided exhibition tours to “Golden Fantasies: Japanese Screens from New York Collections” and “Paradise Now? Contemporary Art from the Pacific” were very attractive to many members. Asia Society, Feb 19th, 2004.
  • CSC Lunar New Year Gala on campus to donate to the Asian and Pacific Islander Coalition on HIV/AIDS. Quite a few ACAA members participated the event to celebrate with the current students. On campus, Feb 21st, 2004.
  • A book reception with Suki Kim about her novel, the Interpreter. It was a full house attendance for the event. Suki's reading and the Q&A were extremely popular. Barnard President Judith Shapiro participated in the event as well. Barnard Hall, Feb 24th, 2004.
  • Inaugural Asian Graduation Reception at the Columbia Club
  • CA Chapter First Event: 16 alumni ranging from class '83-'03 participated the BBQ party at Maria's house. CA Alums shared their passion on such a special interest group and were very enthusiastic about forming different committees to address their particular needs in CA. San Jose, Feb 29th, 2004.
  • April 17, ACAA’s symposia on “Asian Americans: Opening Columbia to the World”
  • Conrad Lung CC’72 on being awarded the 2004 Alumni Medal of Honor from the Alumni Federation of Columbia University
  • Chester Lee '70SEAS and '74BUS received the 2004 Alumni Mentor of the Year Award from the Columbia College Alumni of Color Program (ACOP)

  • Inaugural Welcome Back Alumni & Student: Yuji Sugimoto, CC ’76, was presented with this year’s Alumni Heritage Award by fellow ACAA member Al Lau, SEAS ’71 at the 2004 Asian Heritage Alumni/Student Reception
